How does the brain construct a self?
What are we? Skin, bone and one hundred billion brain cells? Or is there more to it? How does the darkness inside our skulls become a world of people and places, pleasure and pain, love and loss?
Alex is a neuroscientist who seems to have all the answers. His wife, Alice, is suffering from a ‘butterfly glioma’, which threatens to alter the very core of the woman he fell in love with.
After an experiment goes wrong, under the stern gaze of Alice’s father Derek, he is forced to face the truth of his identity.
On Ego is a dynamic, heartfelt exploration of relationships, humanity
and what it means to be unique.
In 2005 Director Mick Gordon joined with neuropsychologist Paul Broks (Into The Silent Lands)
to create this Theatre Essay for Gordon's company On Theatre.
Mind Over Matter are the first UK company to revive On Ego since it's staging at the Soho Theatre in 2005.
Since their 2015 staging in York, which won the prestigious York Performance Award, the critically acclaimed production by Mind Over Matter has had a successful run of the re-imagined production at 2016's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This production will continue its journey in 2017.
Gordon’s play is uniquely presented using visual media, physical storytelling, and gestural language; choreographed in conjunction with movement director, Amy Warren, and accompanied by an original score by composer, Scott J Hurley.
